Occupational Voice Symposium in London in March '09

As Symposium Director, she pulled together a very wide ranging programme focussed entirely on the theme 'Protecting the Voice in the Workplace'. The topics reflected the current debates and interest in vocal ergonomics, risk factors at work and risk prevention.

One of the objectives of the Symposium was to bridge the gap between research efforts and the need for a better understanding of the complex relationships between occupation, voice use and voice disorders.

Through one of VCN's Trustees, Philippa Moll, herself an SLT at St.Georges, Tooting in London, the VCN was invited to present 3 different papers (the only organisation invited to do so!).

On page 5 you will find more detailed reports on our Papers covering 'The Teacher's Voice' given in conjuction with the ATL, 'Occupational Voice Issues in Call Centres : Prevention  before treatment', and 'The Employers' perspective : More than a Duty of Care'.

The 2 day event was both international (Italy, Spain, Finland, USA, Greece, Korea, Hong Kong and Australia were all represented), thought provoking and challenging (particularly from Professor Paul Carding of  Newcastle University and Freemans Hospital)

The VCN had a Stand which most delegates visited during the breaks. We were so popular we ran out of some of our popular publications!!

Thanks to all VCN personnel involved : Dr.Lesley Hendy, Kate Quigley (ATL), Philippa Moll, Roz and  David Comins (for considerable input into the papers), Phyllida Furse and Jeremy Stoke.
