VOICE CARE NETWORK UK
SPRING STUDY DAY(London)
Making Sense of Learning
an inter-disciplinary approach
SATURDAY 14TH MAY 2011
“Whatever role you have in life, every action you undertake, every thought you entertain, every memory you hold, every hang up you possess, every quirk and foible, it’s all the result of chemistry and electricity working across a network of squidgy organic matter that you have helped shape throughout your life.”(Dr Andrew Curran)
What actually goes on when we learn something? What makes something stick so that we can recall it, whether it be a word, a poem, a tune, a painful experience or a new skill? Do two halves make more than one whole? What part do our emotional responses play?
We will consider research and a range of approaches to promote both a deeper understanding of how people learn and the different ways they potentially engage with the work we do. It will enable us as teachers and therapists to be further equipped to promote effective change in our clients or patients.
The day will be of value to all voice professionals including speech and language therapists, voice teachers, singing teachers and performers.
Dr Andrew Curran, practicing paediatric neurologist at Alder Hey Hospital, Liverpool. He is committed to using his extraordinary knowledge of the workings of the human brain to make a difference in the educational experience of all young people. He is involved in Manchester University’s Department of Education in developing research ideas looking at the use of emotional literacy in our classrooms. H is book: ‘The Little Book of Big Stuff about the Brain’ (2008) is the user’s manual “that your brain didn’t come with”. (available on the day)
Christina Shewell MA, FRCSLT, ADVS has worked for many years as speech and language therapist, theatre voice teacher, presentation skills coach, and senior university lecturer in voice and counselling skills both nationally and internationally. VOICE CARE NETWORK SPECIAL STUDY DAY
SATURDAY 11TH JUNE 2011
with
Cicely Berry, O.B.E., Hon. D. Lit.,
Voice Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
EARLY BOOKING STRONGLY ADVISED
This is a rare opportunity to work with Cicely Berry who is held in the highest regard internationally for her contributions to voice. Although she is regarded in iconic proportions by student and professional actors alike, her work has significant impact on a range of other professions. Her influence rests in highest places. In her own words:
“When going into a workshop, my primary objective is to get people to feel something in the language… to make the words active.”
“We live in a literal age: ‘this is what this means, that is what that means…’ instead of discovering how you feel by speaking it.”
"Language is not just from the mind. It evolves out of the necessity of the body."
After an interval of several years since her last workshop with us, we are delighted to offer our members the chance to experience, first hand, a voice and text workshop with our patron and long term supporter. As author her publications, DVDs and CDs include: Voice and the Actor, The Actor and the Text, Your Voice and How to Use It, Text in Action, the extensive: The Working Shakespeare Collection (includes a Workbook for Teachers), Where Words Prevail.
